History of the Award

Part of the Mission of Rotary International is to promote the concept of Service as a worthy endeavour.

One of the Kew on Yarra's past Vocational Service Directors, Colin Berris, proposed making a community service awarding to a local business that provided service excellence as a means of fostering and encouraging the ideal of service excellence.

Four years ago the Kew on Yarra Rotary Club commenced the scheme by making a service excellence award in the Harp Village shopping precinct. In 2007, under the guidance of the Club's Vocational Service Director, David Shave, the scheme has been extended to 9 shopping precincts in the northern part of the City of Boroondara with a certificate awarded to winners in each precinct from over 150 nominations proposed from community representatives served by the businesses. Next year it is proposed to extend the scheme further across the city.

The awards have been named in recognition of Dr John Reddish, a General Practitioner who lives in the area and a Past District Governor for RD 9800 and someone exemplifies the Rotary ideal of Service above Self being a Paul Harris Fellow with 4 Rubies. We were honoured to have Dr John Reddish present the awards during the evening.

The recipient of main John Reddish Award, an engraved crystal plinth, was selected from winners across all 9 precincts. It was awarded to the proprietors of the Boroondara Milk Bar in the Boroondara Shopping precinct, Dimitrios & Andrea Skliros.

Their friendly willing service over many long hours working in their milk bar exemplify the Rotary ideal, Service Above Self. As a club, we thank them for their service and congratulate them on their awards.

In addition to the main John Reddish Service Excellence Award, certificates acknowledging service excellence within the 9 shopping precincts in the northern third of the City of Boroondara. These businesses were selected from nominations made by local people served by the businesses as an acknowledgement of outstanding service to the community consistent with the Rotary motto,

"Service above Self"

In 2009, we are seeking and recognising an exemplary business from the 23 business precincts in the City of Boroondara for excellence in service.
